St. George Marathon Information

Runners come from all over the world to participate in the annual St. George Marathon which is held the first Saturday in October. The first St. George marathon was in 1977. Only 38 runners finished the race out of the 57 who started. Today, thousands of runners register for the race which is then narrowed down by lottery to only 7400 participants.

Residents of Utah's Washington County are guaranteed entry in the marathon without having to participate in the lottery. Also, the marathon has established Ten, Twenty and Thirty year clubs for those who have run the St. George Marathon the requisite number of years. Members of these clubs are automatically registered for the next marathon.

Runners who live outside Washington County who run in two out of 10 Washington County races throughout the year are also guaranteed entry in the marathon provided one of the two races is a St. George race. The St. George races are:

The St. George marathon is the 13th largest American marathon. Runner's World magazine evaluated 319 marathons and has heaped many accolades on this particular marathon calling it the best organized, one of the "10 Most Scenic Marathons" and a "Marathon to Build a Vacation Around."

The marathon begins at an elevation of 5240 feet in the Pine Valley Mountains and finishes at the 2680 foot elevation of Worthen Park in the City of St. George. According to Runners World, participants in this marathon "experience 26.2 miles of exquisite landscape, extraordinary community support and overall sheer accomplishment."

After the runners begin their race, 12 hundred walkers join the St. George Mayor for a 2.1 mile walk from Bluff Street Park to Worthen Park where they greet the marathon runners as they cross the finish line.

The St. George Marathon is USA Track & Field Certified and Sanctioned which means it has been accurately measured. A marathon certificate here can be used to qualify a runner for entrance into the Boston Marathon. It is estimated that approximately 20 percent of St. George runners qualify for the Boston race.

The day before the marathon, NordicTrack sponsors a Health and Fitness Expo attended by more than 20,000 people. The latest fitness equipment and apparel is presented by appoximately separate vendors.

Participants and visitors can drive to St. George, which is half-way between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City and about 120 miles north of Las Vegas. Flying into St. George Municipal Airport is also an option. St. George hotels offer up to a 45 percent rate reduction to marathon participants and the 2.1 extra people it is estimated each participant brings along.
