Martian Marathon Information

There is another space race brewing, and this time the Martians are coming. Dearborn, Michigan might be a city defined by the auto-industry, but don't tell that to the running enthusiasts that host the Martian Marathon. Since 2001, this spacey marathon and its affiliated races have been welcoming runners to a weekend of fun, quirky festivities.

While the Martian Marathon is definitely on the smaller side of organized marathons, often with less than 500 finishers, the event is still a first class trip to the moon. Beginning with their beautifully designed and interactive website, the Running Fit organization that puts on the marathon has worked hard to create an event that leaves an impression.

Registering for the Marathon is easy, with online, mail, and late registration options available. Better still, because of the relatively small size of the event, if you aren't able to make it to the pre-race Expo, you can pick up your race packet on race day.

That said, especially for a small race, the Race Expo held on the Friday before the big day is definitely worth a look. Featuring a wide variety of vendors, the deals on shoes and training equipment are simply out of this world.

If you are traveling in from a different city, or planet, the Martian Marathon has set up deals with several area hotels. Getting a good night sleep is one of the keys to running a great race, and with some of the hotels offering free shuttle services to the event, you really can't go wrong.

Once you arrive at the start line, you will quickly find that the aliens running the race really know what they're doing. The lightly rolling Martian courses have been designed to be wide, traffic free, and competitive. A Boston Marathon qualifying race, the marathon typically takes an out and back route, cleverly taking advantage of Dearborn's many green spaces.

As you navigate the course, you can expect to find multiple fueling stations to keep your UFO humming at peak performance. Although you might find parts of the race as deserted as the farthest reaches of space, you won't feel alone when you hear the cries of the race's many enthusiastic volunteers.

Of course, there's a good chance that, at some point in the race, no amount of encouragement is going to keep you from feeling like you've been caught by a tractor beam. Reengage your engines by considering that with the small number of runners, and awards given to 1st-5th place in all 5-year age groups, you might just walk away from this journey with a little bit of hardware.

Whether you cross the finish line at warp speed or in the six and a half hour time limit, the Martian booty is still yours to keep. Included in the low registration fee, every earthling that finishes the race is awarded a tech running shirt, finisher's medal, and finisher's certificate.

Are you ready to boldly go to infinity and beyond? Then lace up your shoes and strap on your jetpack, because the Martian Marathon might just be the race for you.
