Duluth Attractions

Duluth is one of the largest cities in Minnesota, and it offers tourists a wide range of entertaining and educational attractions. Whether you are interested in spending the day in the water or on land, Duluth is certain to provide you with a memorable vacation.

Water lovers flock to this port town for the fishing and other recreational activities. Charter Fishing is a big draw, and there are eight different companies that offer half day and full day fishing trips. Sunrise Charter Fishing also places an emphasis on teaching children how to fish. Most of the charter fishing companies provide all of the equipment that you will need so even if you left your rods and lures at home, you can still enjoy a day of fishing.

If you want to spend a day on the water without a fishing pole, then the area's abundant kayaking, sailboat rides, surfing and canoeing options are sure to be a great fit. There are specialized companies that offer instructions and equipment rentals, or you can head out on Lake Superior or the St. Louis River with your own equipment.

Those who prefer to stay dry while enjoying marine life should definitely head to the Great Lakes Aquarium. This aquarium features over 70 different species, and the unique setup allows visitors to take a hands-on approach to learning. Visitors will be invited to explore the geologic history of the area, and they will also have the opportunity to pet stingrays and sturgeons.

Once you've visited the Great Lakes Aquarium, you can head to the Lake Superior Zoo to round out your day of wildlife related educational fun. The zoo offers a diverse mixture of animals, including kangaroos, snow leopards and seals, and it also features a zoo train that will take you throughout the entire zoo. Visitors can attend daily animal feedings, and the zoo hosts a nice variety of special events throughout the year.

Sometimes the best way to learn about an area is by riding through it. The Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad operates a 90-minute train ride that allows visitors to soak up the area's natural beauty and history from the comfort of their seat. The train also features outside seating in an open-air Safari Car to enable riders to get a closer look at the impressive scenery and wildlife.

Many people come to Duluth for the opportunity to ski. The Spirit Mountain Recreation Area features 22 runs set on over 175 acres. Snowboarders also enjoy the mountain's courses, and skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels will find a course that is suited to their abilities. In addition to the ski runs, the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area has an Adventure Park that features a roller coaster and a zip line, a banquet hall and a campground.

Art lovers will enjoy the Tweed Museum of Art. Located on the Duluth Campus of the University of Minnesota, this museum features over 7,000 pieces of art that represent a wide variety of different time periods and cultures.
