Detroit Marathon Information

The Detroit Marathon is a 26.2 mile race run annually in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This international marathon course has been going strong since 1978. The marathon boasts the only international underwater mile in the world as runners seize the course that runs through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel underneath the Detroit River. This race is a USATF-certified Boston-qualifier course.

The Health and Fitness Expo will be held during the marathon events. More than 90 exhibitors will be on hand for the Health and Fitness Expo. Exhibitors will be showcasing the latest in apparel, technology, sports, nutrition, and fitness and running footwear. Runners will be required to pick up their race packets at the Expo to receive a bib number, timing device, event t-shirt and a goodie bag.

There will be a few other races running simultaneously with the marathon for those with disabilities as well as those who want to walk or run a shorter course. In addition to the full Marathon, the Detroit Marathon will host an International Half-Marathon Run/Walk, Marathon Relay, a 5K Fun Run/Walk, a U.S.-Only Half-Marathon and a Disabilities Division.

The Marathon uses a wave start where small groups of runners begin the race at two to three minute intervals. Start times are given based on the projected race time of each runner on their registration form. Participants must be at least 16 years of age to participate in the Marathon, International Half-marathon and the US-Only Half-Marathon. All ages are welcome to participate in he 5K Fun Run/Walk and the Relay. Participants are also eligible to enter both the Relay and Half-Marathon, or the Relay and the Marathon.

The Marathon and International Half-Marathon will use the honor system. Participants will walk the marathon distance at the speed of their choice. Walkers will wear bibs identifying them as walkers. Any walkers caught running will be disqualified.

The full Detroit Marathon course takes runners through historic Detroit neighborhoods, around Belle Isle, along the RiverWalk and through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. This race also features two international border crossings and two bridges.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third based on clock time. All those who finish the Half-Marathon sponsored by Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers will receive a commemorative medal featuring a classic Corvette.

All participants ages 16 and older in the Marathon and International Half-Marathon will require a passport to cross the North American Border. All participants under 16 years of age will require an original or copy of their birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship. A citizenship or naturalization card is also acceptable. All of the entries will go through government clearance before the race. Documentation will be needed to pick up a race packet at the Health and Fitness Expo. Registration for all races is required in advance. Strollers, roller blades, bicycles and skateboards will not be permitted in any of the races. The marathon course will close at 2:00 P.M. Pace teams are available for those looking to qualify for Boston.

Over 50,000 spectators are expected to attend this event. Volunteer positions are available for anyone that wants to help with the race and events.
