Information about Carlsbad Marathon

With its perfect weather and enjoyable entertainment, the Carlsbad Marathon and half marathon is an exciting race with picturesque scenery. The city begins the marathon event in the winter and provides each runner with a virtual goodie bag, a long-sleeve fabric shirt and a medal of participation.

When runners tackle the Carlsbad Marathon, they'll be running 39.3 miles while surrounded by scenic terrain. The marathon series starts in January with the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon. The Half Marathon is the next challenge, and in April, runners will face the La Jolla Half with the finale competed at America's Finest City Half during August.

The Carlsbad events typically sell out, and potential participants should make sure they sign up early. When marathoners complete all three events in the same calendar year, they'll receive a Triple Crown medal from the marathon's sponsors while celebrating in the festival area.

When participating in the marathon, runners and walkers must maintain a speed of at least a 19:27-minute mile pace during the entire event. If a participant is unable to keep the minimum pace, then he or she must finish the race on Carlsbad Boulevard and Carlsbad Village Drive. Once a participant completes the race on the secondary path, he or she will receive credit for completing the half marathon distance.

Entry fees are nonrefundable except for active duty military personnel who receive unexpected orders for deployment. During this situation, the race participant may choose to race the following year's marathon or receive their entrance fee back minus the processing costs.

After a participant registers, he or she may transfer the entry to another runner. However, the new marathoner must register with a letter of confirmation from the initial runner. Potential participants should be aware that the marathon's officials do not offer a waiting list.

In order for racers to receive their race shirt, they must visit the Health & Lifestyle Expo center, as officials will not mail shirts to the participants. During race day, marathon volunteers will set up a Gear Check tent that will permit racers to leave their equipment in a safe place.

The Carlsbad Marathon honors each participant with a medal. However, the first three runners to cross the finish line in age groups that include 17 and under, 18 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79 and 80 and over will receive an additional medal.

Marathon officials will also distribute three special military medals for service personnel in the age groups of 29 and under, 30 to 39 along with 40 and over. Race officials will use each participant's net chip time to determine the age group awards and the prize money.

The marathon features medical staff that includes a group of doctors and a field hospital, which participants will find at the finish line. When runners prefer a challenging race in a beautiful setting, the Carlsbad Marathon is the perfect choice.
