Information about Capital City Marathon

What makes a great marathon? If your answer is a million people, a flat course, and an expensive registration fee, then make sure you skip the Capital City Marathon in Olympia, Washington.

Held annually in the late spring, the Capital City Marathon is a great example of the charm that a well-organized, intimate marathon can bring to the table. With only about 2000 runners in the three course options (a Five Miler, Half Marathon, and Marathon), you can expect plenty of room as you make your way through the state capital and lush green countryside.

Early registration for the race ends about two months before the race, but the organizers have made the great choice to keep online registration open to about a week out. The fee is typically on the lower end for Marathons, and the swag you get for the money includes a nice looking shirt or jacket and a really neat ceramic coaster.

Packet pickup is conveniently scheduled on the weekend, meaning no having to take off work to make sure you can race. Whether you pick up your packet the day before the race or the day of, make sure to look around the small but satisfying Run Fair right near the start line in Sylvester Park.

The night before the big race offers two of the best details of the weekend. Aside from the number of nice restaurants in downtown Olympia, the traditional Pasta Dinner hosted by the Waterstreet Café & Bar is definitely worth the price of admission. Meanwhile, not only does the host hotel offer reasonable price and a good night's sleep, it is also literally right across the street from the start line.

On race day, while you should remember to leave early just in case, there is plenty of parking within walking distance of the event. Once you've warmed up, remember to pin on your bib before the race, the timing chip is built into the race number!

Expect a challenging course once the gun sounds, the Capital City Marathon is a Boston qualifier and certified by the USATF. Rolling hills and a few steep climbs are ahead of you, but Aid Stations and Sani-Cans are available at 2-mile intervals. With mile markers and monitors at all major intersections, it pays to remember, for every uphill there is a downhill!

While there aren't spectators lined up along the entire route, the enthusiasm of the finish line might make you feel like you're at one of the Majors. Post-race, cool down, in the friendly atmosphere by grabbing some refreshments and a space blanket. If your body is still sore, the Bodymechanics School of Myotherapy and Massage offers massages free of charge.

If the charm of the laidback Northwest hasn't one you over by this point, stick around for the awards ceremony. With a limited number of runners, there is a good chance you may have won something.

Charming, well organized, and friendly, the Capital City Marathon is a must for runners of all ages. If you are passionate about running, then Capital City is the place to be!
